Coffee loyalty had its biggest shake-up in years when Starbucks relaunched its entire program in March 2026 with status tiers and value caps — and it was not the only chain to move the goalposts. Here is what each major US coffee program now earns, what a free drink actually costs, and which programs quietly got worse.

The 2026 Starbucks overhaul, in plain numbers

On March 10, 2026, Starbucks replaced its long-running Rewards program with a three-tier system: Green (everyone), Gold (500 Stars in 12 months), and Reserve (2,500 Stars in 12 months). Base earning is now 1 Star per $1, with Gold earning 1.2 and Reserve 1.7. The redemption ladder runs from 25 Stars for a drink customization up to 400 for merchandise, with a free handcrafted drink at 200 Stars.

The catch is in two places. First, the flat bonus for paying with a reloaded card is gone, replaced by fixed reload bonuses — analysts at One Mile at a Time calculate that base members lost at least 25% of their old earning potential in the change. Second, the 100-Star and 200-Star redemptions now carry value caps (reported at $6 and $10 respectively), so the old trick of redeeming for the most expensive item on the menu no longer works. The sweetener: Stars never expire once you reach Gold or Reserve, and a new 60-Star tier gives $2 off anything.

Every program compared

Figures are drawn from each company's published program pages and terms as of early August 2026, with sources listed at the end. Where a chain does not publish a number, the table says so rather than guessing.

Which is genuinely worth joining

Best effective return for app users: Caribou

Two points per dollar when you order ahead in the app, against a 200-point redemption for any size drink worth up to $10, works out to roughly a $10 drink per $100 of app spend — one of the cleanest returns in the category, and the redemption cap is published rather than hidden.

Best if you go daily: Starbucks — but only at Gold or above

The new program is built to reward frequency. At Reserve, 1.7 Stars per dollar with no expiry is materially better than the old base program; at Green, with a 6-month expiry clock and a lower earn rate than before, it is worse. If you visit a few times a month, your Stars will now regularly die before a redemption.

Best subscription — if you actually drink that much: Panera

At $14.99 a month, the Sip Club pays for itself in five or six drip coffees. But note the direction of travel: the price has risen from $10.99 at launch to $14.99, and from August 19, 2026 "unlimited" is capped at 30 drinks per billing cycle. It remains good value for a daily habit and poor value for anything less.

The cautionary tale: Dutch Bros

Dutch Bros cut earning from 5 points per dollar to 3 in 2023 — a 40% reduction — and added a 180-day expiry at the same time. The program still drove nearly three-quarters of transactions in mid-2025, which tells you how sticky these systems are even after they get worse.

The expiry trap

Every program above except upper-tier Starbucks now has an expiry mechanism, and they are not alike. Dunkin's is the strictest of the big chains: since October 2025, points die 12 months after the month you earned them, no matter how often you visit. Peet's and Caribou use inactivity clocks instead — keep buying and points survive; stop for six months and the balance is gone. Dutch Bros runs the clock per-point from the day earned.

The practical rule is the one that applies across this whole category: points saved are points at risk; points spent are points banked. When you have enough for the redemption you want, take it.

How this interacts with receipt surveys

Loyalty points and receipt surveys are separate systems, and at some chains you can benefit from both in a single visit. Dunkin', for example, runs both a rewards program and a receipt survey — our TellDunkin guide covers the survey side, including the caution that some receipts no longer print survey invitations. If you only have time for one, the survey's printed offer usually beats a single visit's points, but it expires in days rather than months. Our comparison of every US receipt survey shows which chains print an instant offer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did the 2026 Starbucks changes make the program better or worse?

For occasional customers, worse: base earning fell by at least a quarter by One Mile at a Time's calculation, redemptions gained value caps, and Green-tier Stars expire in 6 months. For daily customers who reach Gold or Reserve, it is arguably better — higher earn rates and Stars that never expire.

Which coffee rewards program has the strictest expiry?

Among major chains, Dunkin' — since October 2025, points expire 12 months after the month they were earned even if you visit every day. Inactivity-based clocks (Peet's at 180 days, Caribou at 6 months) are gentler for regulars but wipe the whole balance if you lapse.

Is the Panera Sip Club still unlimited?

Not from August 19, 2026 — Panera's own subscription terms cap redemptions at 30 drinks per billing cycle, alongside the existing one-drink-every-2-hours rule. The price is $14.99/month or $119.99/year.

Why are Tim Hortons and Scooter's missing numbers in the table?

Because neither publishes US redemption costs on its public pages — the values are only visible inside the app. We list what is officially published and say so where it is not, rather than repeating unverified figures from aggregator sites.
